Forest & trails

Know what is open before the pavement ends.

The San Juan National Forest is enormous and conditions vary by elevation, district and season. Use Ed’s guide to choose the right questions, then verify the live answer.

The useful checks

A trail name is not a complete plan. Check road access, seasonal gates, fire restrictions, weather, permits and whether the route matches the group. Download maps before losing service and leave the itinerary with someone who is not on the trip.

Use the right district

The Pagosa, Columbine and Dolores ranger districts cover different parts of the forest. A local recommendation is a starting point; the responsible district and current notices are the final check.
